This is just the beginning! Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing opportunities to volunteer, train, and connect with the Alphin Brook. Whether you’re passionate about wildlife, looking to boost your wellbeing, or simply curious about your local river, there will be a place for you. Together, we can create a healthier river and a stronger community.
We will be working alongside the Environment Agency, local councils, community and third sector organisations. Please get in touch if you would like to work or partner with us.
Don’t forget to follow us on our social media channels to stay up to date with our latest news, events, and ways to get involved.
The White-Clawed Crayfish (WCC) — the UK’s only native freshwater crayfish, has declined by over 70% in the South West. Habitat loss, pollution, and the invasive American Signal Crayfish are the main threats.
Signal crayfish carry a deadly virus, outcompete native species, and damage riverbanks, increasing erosion and flooding. The WCC is now listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
The last known populations of WCC survive in the Creedy Yeo and River Culm, but both are under threat. We want to discover whether WCC or Signal Crayfish are present in the Alphin Brook River, a key step in protecting and restoring local biodiversity. We will then share this data with the Environment Agency and Wildwood Devon who are running a breeding programme and looking for arc sites for future populations.
Himalayan balsam might look pretty, but it’s a fast-spreading invasive plant that smothers native wildflowers, weakens riverbanks, and harms local wildlife. When it dies back, bare soil is left exposed, increasing erosion and flood risk.
That’s where balsam bashing comes in! It’s a fun, hands-on way to help nature, simply pulling up or snapping the plants before they release their seeds. Every stem removed makes a real difference.
Join our volunteer days to protect the Alphin Brook River, restore wildlife habitats, and enjoy a day outdoors with your community. Get involved. Make a difference.
If you’re interested in volunteering with Mindfully Wild CIC in a different capacity than those listed above, we’d love to hear from you! Tell us a bit about yourself, your skills, and how you’d like to get involved. We’re always open to new ideas, collaborations with local groups and organisations, and opportunities to expand what we offer as we grow.
There may also be opportunities to join our Advisory Panel or become a Volunteer Conservation Leader. To find out more Email: info@mindfullywild.org.uk
